Research & Inspiration
Nature, more specifically landscape in its shifting, untamed presence, is at the centre of my practice. Living in Cornwall, my daily life is shaped by weather, seasonal light, estuary, woodland and field an ever-changing landscape that I in habit and return to.
My work moves between scales of attention. I collect plants from which I take direct monoprints, revealing intricate structures that might otherwise go unnoticed the delicate architecture of a stem, the veining of a leaf, the fragility of a weed at my feet. At other times I am transfixed by a bird in woodland or on a glistening estuary, then step back to take in the wider expanse sky, water, sea, fields, horizon or a flock overhead.
This movement between the intimate and the expansive shapes my work. Each part feels intrinsic to the whole, the smallest plant form and the open landscape are bound within the same living system.
Through painting, drawing and printmaking often using a restricted, seasonal palette, I attempt to record not just what the landscape looks like, but how it feels to stand in it. The work becomes a record of presence, internal and external landscapes meeting through line, tone, colour and markmaking.
